Ever had your system accessed by unsavory elements? Well, let's hope it doesn't happen. Researchers from Indiana University, however, have pointed out that the number of unsecured Wi-Fi connections that have been popping up in various cities might make attacks on computer systems much more common than before. Want to find out more about this? Check out the full article. |

It's yet another case of Texas-filed lawsuits being slapped at large companies: Wi-LAN, an Ottawa-based company that provides and licenses patents for telecommunications equipment, has sued about 22 companies including Sony, Apple, Best Buy, Netgear, Belkin, HP, and Intel among many others. Wi-LAN claims that the 22 companies have infringed on their WiFi and DSL patents, and that they are illegally using Wi-LAN's Wi-Fi and DSL technology in their devices such as wireless routers and modems. The company currently claims ownership on about 280 issued and pending patents. Will this lawsuit hold water? Do check this space for more updates! |

Details on Nokia's N810 internet tablet are now out, and we couldn't help but feel awed by its presence. Make no mistake, this is not really a phone and does not work by receiving phone signals. The N810 connects to the internet (and make internet phone calls through Skype or Gizmo) via Wi-Fi connection through Boingo Wireless, Earthlink and The Cloud, among other Wi-Fi service providers. The N810 looks like Sony mylo's older sibling, with the same sliding qwerty keypad and similar basic functions. It's small enough to fit in one's pocket, however, making it an indispensable tool for online communication on the go. It basically lets you fire off instant messages, check emails, make internet calls, all without having to lug a laptop around. The N810 has a 4.13" inch screen with a crisp 800x400 widescreen resolution, and also has an integrated GPS receiver making it an ideal device for tracking and navigation via Wayfinder. It also has an integrated VGA camera, and with an optional 10GB memory card, you'll never have to venture out into the world unprepared. |

For those of us who prefer their online gaming and internet surfing on the go, then this next gadget should be right up your alley: the G100, as revealed by POSDATA. Touted as the first ever mobile gaming device to take advantage of WiMAX, it's set to take the gaming world by storm - as not only does it offer high-speed internet surfing on the go, but also online gameplay that could turn out to be free of any lag whatsoever. Awesome. So what does the G100 actually capable of? We're not sure of most of the details yet - that being, graphics and sound - but what we do know is that it will take advantage of WiMAX. WiMAX is essentially a more powerful version of Wi-Fi, with its range able to cover vast areas instead of just a few meters. This pretty much means that you'll be able to play online virtually anywhere - and you don't have to walk all over just to find an access point. Looking at the G100, it certainly looks the part of a gaming handheld. It sports a four-inch touch sensitive screen, as well as a sliding eight-button control pad. Handy. And if you're worried if it's just going to be a gaming device, fret not - besides WiMAX, it also supports both Wi-Fi and BlueTooth networks for added enjoyment - a great feature, considering that users can hook up the G100 to their laptops for access to any of those three networks. Certainly a very cool new gadget from POSDATA. Updates as we get them! |

Call history. Calculator. Multiple ringtones. Text Messaging. These are just a few of the features mobile phone users take for granted. At a glance, one may think that little by little, mobile phones are conquering the landline phone market. But think again. Despite the booming technology of mobile phones (ever-increasing file storage space, increasing camera pixels and whatnot), more people and businesses still cling to their desktop phones. Cisco Systems, Avaya Inc, as well as many other telephony companies have developed advanced mobile communications solutions, such as dual-mode phones that work with extension dialing that comes with PBX (private branch exchange) systems, even on the go. Another variant, which are softphones for laptops, are also adding more features and are decidedly more user-friendly than desktop and landline phones. However, despite of all the improvements that mobile communications has to offer, many people still prefer using the more traditional landlines as well as their Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) counterparts. "People still relate to their physical phone. It's like their office space. It's very near and dear to their hearts," said a network administrator from a Canadian engineering company, who asked to remain anonymous. There are more reasons beside mere sentimentality. There are the still-recurring issues that plague mobile phones, such as lesser sound quality compared to their more traditional siblings, and the softphones' dependence on PC performance. With about 500 million users, desktop and landline phones can't be phased out that easily. "It would take about five to seven years for wireless phones to replace wired," according to Ken Dulaney, mobility analyst for Gartner Inc. |

These days, you can get cancer from just about everything: Junk food, "health food," sunlight, and mobile phones. Don't look now, but Wi-Fi may be raising your chances of getting the dreaded disease as well. Concerned members of the scientific community, education professionals, and parents have been pushing for a real study that focuses on the possible health consequences of the system. The latest and biggest member of the plight is no less than Sir William Stewart, who is most famous for his work regarding the probe on mobile phone radiation and what threats it poses to human health. Wi-Fi, or wireless network connections, make use of signals emitted by wireless adapters and routers to send data and facilitate internet access without the use of cables. However, critics of the system point out that the level of radiation within the Wi-Fi field may be in excess of tolerance and may cause cancer or brain damage. Strange illnesses have been documented in science journals involving people who work long hours in Wi-Fi perimeters. An incident of a teacher who fell ill in the Stowe School prompted the school administration to do away with their wireless network. Many other campuses in Europe have either suspended or partially decommissioned their wireless networks. "Do we not know enough already to say, 'Stop!'?" says Professor Olle Johansson of Sweden's Karolinska Institute as he described the adverse health effects of Wi-Fi. The professor also pointed out that although there's a significant number of articles published in science journals regarding the matter, there's not a single full-scale study on it. The Professional Association of Teachers will write next week to the office of the Secretary of State for Education to ask for a real study which will once and for all determine whether or not the system is safe to have in homes and classrooms. Action appropriate to the findings are expected to be taken by the government. |

Here's something for the burgeoning carputer crowd. A company called Autonet has come up with a gadget that'll let you turn your car into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. According to the company, the Autonet Mobile will let people enjoy internet services and Wi-Fi connectivity wherever and whenever they want to.The Autonet Mobile requires no cellular data cars, wiring, or special software. You just turn it on, log on and surf. This little doohickey would also be good for tour buses and their ilk, and would be a great boon for Sony PSP and Nintendo DS owners stuck somewhere without a Wi-Fi connection. Autonet will be unveiling the Autonet Mobile in Las Vegas on January 8 at CES International 2007. If you're in the area, you can go and give it a little test drive yourself. Wi-Fi freeloaders often have a bad rep nowadays. Months back, analysts mentioned that Wi-Fi freeloading could be likened to a house that's been left open. The only difference is that the thief could take the TV and could be jailed for stealing, while the Wi-Fi stealer is gonna get away from it without facing prosecution. Well, apparently, that's not the case. A man was arrested for using the open WiFi at a coffee shop without buying coffee or any of the store's products. Now that's harsh! But now, some businesses have learned to embrace them Wi-Fi hoarders, in fact some Best Western Hotels are even offering Wi-Fi leeches with free coffee. Experts from Incentive Magazine are taking the side of Best Western and urging businesses to accept them Wi-Fi hoarders as well. Why is that? According to Incentive's Peter Roosen and Tatsuya Nakagawa, accepting Wi-fi freeloaders "suggests making it easier to connect, by removing logins or other annoying limiting gates, and then just being happy that someone associates your brand with something positive (while lowering the administrative headache as well)." Good point. In other words, accepting them would generate some positive feelings toward the company in a cheaper way. We could only hope that business establishments would follow in Best Western's philosophy. |
